And remember to visit the Friends Used Book Store at the Civic Center Library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 11:00 am and 8:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am to 3:00 pm for ongoing book bargains!
THE KEY TO THE LIBRARY: September is Library Card Sign-up Month! Introduce your child to the wonders of the library this month and they'll get a free book! Livonia residents just need to stop by their favorite branch and get their child a library card, and they'll receive a free children's book. (The child must be accompanied by an adult with proper ID.) So start of the school year right and get your kids in the library habit!
TIME TO HIT THE BOOKS (AND KEYBOARDS): The school bells are ringing and homework is once again being assigned. Here are a few pointers for that visit to the library to work on your assignment.
*Know what your assignment is and when it is due. If you have a written copy of the assignment, bring that with you. If your teacher has certain sources you can or cannot use, or a certain number of sources you need, make a note of that, too. If the topic or subject is broad, narrow it down before doing the research, but be flexible in case you can’t find all the information you need.
*Bring your library card with you, as well as pens, pencils, paper, calculators, and any other tools you’ll think you’ll need. And don’t forget change for the photocopier and any other printouts.
*Use all the library can offer you -- books, magazines, government documents, the Internet and, of course, the librarians. Librarians are trained to help sniff out information, but remember, it is your assignment and your class, and you’ll know best what you need to complete that work.
*Do your research early. Assignments, especially in middle and high school, are often given to several classes and our materials may not be available if you wait too long.
*Be creative. Try to think of a topic or project that is not being done by ten other students. A good way to find a unique topic is to browse the library shelves for your area of interest or flip through a reference book for ideas. Not only will you find something your teacher hasn’t seen many times before, but you’ll have a lot of information in hand before you know it!
*Remember our hours. Only Civic Center is open on Sunday afternoons, and Noble and Sandburg close at 8pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays, and 5pm on Thursday. Plan ahead and give yourself enough time to find your books, search and print from the Internet and make photocopies before closing.
*If you’re taking college courses, keep in mind a lot of the materials you may need will be more readily available at your college or university library than a public library. College and university libraries use all their resources to develop their collections in support the school’s curriculum, including purchasing journals, papers and databases designed for college and research use, unlike public libraries that must serve the needs of the general public.
*Are you a teacher? Take some time and drop by early in the year to see what materials are available for your students to complete the assignments you have planned. If you’re not finding what your students will need, talk to one of the librarians in the appropriate area (children’s or adult services) and see what we can find or for other suggestions.
NAVIGATING YOUR WAY INTO COLLEGE: The Noble Library will be hosting a seminar on “College Planning and Strategies” on Tuesday September 8th at 6:00 pm. This program, presented by Sheryl Krasnow of College and Career Counseling Associates, Inc., will cover planning for and completing the college admissions process. Students applying for college and their parents will benefit from this program. Please visit or call Noble at (734) 421-6600 for more information.
HOT FUDGE! SUNDAYS! The Civic Center Library will be open on Sundays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm for the school year. The Sunday hours return on Sunday September 13th. See you then!
